In most parts of the world, Canada is associated with snow and extremely cold weather. In fact, the Canadian climate varies greatly from one region to another and from one season to another. Even in mid-winter, a good sweater is all you need to keep you warm when you visit Victoria. But go to Churchill in the same season and you'll need to dress like a real Inuit. (In fact, you'll need to dress much more warmly than the Inuit, unless you are as used to icy winds as they are!) Return to this corner of the Far North in mid-summer and you'll find that the afternoons are as mild as they are long.

Canada became a self-governing in 1867. Canada achieved its independence by gradual constitutional change spread over many years. The government is a constitutional monarchy that is also a parliamentary democracy and a federation. The capital is Ottawa. Canada is divided into thirteen provinces and territories.
Canada is a land of many cultures and many peoples. Aboriginal peoples have occupied the territory now called Canada for several thousands of years. It has been said that Canada is a "nation of immigrants." During the 19th and 20th century, waves of immigrants arrived from Europe, attracted by the opportunity of a new and better life in Canada. And continuing over the last 50 years, people from all over the globe have sought a better life in Canada, often known as country of refuge. Canada's geographic proximity to the United States has historically bound the two countries together in the political world as well. Canada's position between the Soviet Union ( now Russia ) and the US was strategically important.

Canada is the country occupying the northern portion of North America, and is the world's second largest country in total area.
Originally inhabited exclusively by aboriginal peoples, Canada was founded as a union of British colonies, some of which had earlier been French colonies. A federal dominion of ten provinces with three territories, Canada peacefully obtained sovereignty from its last colonial possessor, the United Kingdom, in a process beginning in 1867 with its formation and ending in 1982 when Canada gained the authority to amend its own constitution.
Canada is a parliamentary democracy and constitutional monarchy. Canada's head of state is its monarch, who is represented in Canada by the Governor General. The head of government is the Prime Minister.
Canada defines itself as a bilingual and multicultural nation. Both English and French are official languages. In the early 1970s, Canada began to adopt policies based on the concepts of cultural diversity and multiculturalism. Many Canadians now view this as one of the country's key attributes, but there are critics of the multiculturalism policy as well.
A technologically advanced and industrialized nation, Canada is a net exporter of energy because of its large fossil fuel deposits, nuclear energy generation, and hydroelectric power capacity. Its diversified economy relies heavily on an abundance of natural resources and trade, particularly with the United States, with which Canada has had a long and complex relationship, one which can be described as the strongest trade partnership in history.
The ancestors of the Inuit, known to archaeologists as the Thule, arrived in the Canadian Arctic around A.D. 1000. They came from Alaska and gradually moved east, replacing the first inhabitants of the Arctic, the Palaeo-Eskimos, who arrived in the region about 4000 years ago.

About 20,000 years ago there was a land bridge connecting Siberia in Russia to Alaska. Hunters from Siberia traveled across the bridge to become the first people in North America. The Vikings arrived from Scandinavia sometime around 1000 AD in what we now call Newfoundland. The French and the British explored Canada in the 1500s & 1600s.
Canada is like the United States in many ways. Most people live in or near cities. Canada has two official languages, English and French. Canadians work in offices and factories. Most Canadians live in southern Canada within 100 miles of the U.S. Border.
Canada is about the size of the United States (not including Alaska.) The United States has about 290 million people and Canada has 30 million people. That's about as many people as in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut combined. Ottawa is the capital of Canada. It is in the province of Ontario.
Canada is divided into ten provinces and three territories. Canada's smallest province is Prince Edward Island and Northwest Territories is the largest. There are vast open areas, large cities, magnificent glaciers, forests, lakes and mountains.
Most people that live in Quebec speak French. That's because a long time ago when Britain took over Canada, Quebec was the place where most of the French settled. Quebec City is Quebec's capital and the only walled city in North America. It is also the oldest city in Canada. Montreal is Quebec's largest city and the most populated. Quebec produces a lot of Canada's hydroelectricity. If you visit Quebec in the winter you should try skiing. If you ever go in the summer you can enjoy hiking, swimming and golfing.
The weather in Canada is varied. In the winter it can reach well below zero in many parts of Canada. The west coast of Canada is warmer than the east coast. The Rocky Mountains extend from the United States into Canada and separate the east and west coasts of Canada.
The St. Lawrence River is a major shipping route in eastern Canada. Half of Canada's people live in the Saint Lawrence lowlands.
Most of Canada is tundra. Tundra is a treeless area between the icecap and the tree line of Arctic regions. The subsoil is permanently frozen and has only low-growing vegetation such as lichens, mosses, and stunted shrubs.

Canada is the second largest country in the world in terms of land area (9 012 112.20 square kilometres), yet it ranks only 33rd in terms of population. According to Statistics Canada, Canada's population in 2000 was estimated to be 30 750 100. This represents a growth of 3.6% since the 1996 estimate of 29 671 900. Almost all of Canada's population is concentrated in a narrow band along the country’s southern edge. The population is also concentrated by province: Ontario and Quebec contain between them 62% of the total population.
The ancestor of Inuit arrived in Canada in one millenium before Jesus Christ. The Inuit came to Alaska.
The term Iroquoian designates a group of Indian nations united by the common origin of their languages. The Huron-Wendat and the Iroquois are the best-known nations in the group, which included several others when the Europeans arrived. In the early 17th century, the Iroquoian nations were concentrated in the Great Lakes region, near lakes Huron, Ontario and Erie. Before that, there were also Iroquoians in the St. Lawrence Valley. Jacques Cartier met them in 1535-36, before they mysteriously disappeared in the second half of the 16th century.

The communities in the Arctic are centers for trade, commerce, culture and education. The sizes range from as small as a few people to much larger centres with a few thousand people. However large or small, each community has its own history and is surrounded by its own unique landscape. The Inuit live in one of the coldest and harshest regions of the world. Inuit lands include the northeastern tip of Siberia, the islands of the Bering Sea, and the coastal regions of mainland Alaska. They also include the north coast and islands of the Canadian Arctic and most of the west coast and part of the east coast of Greenland. The region is often called the Land of the Midnight Sun because at a certain point of the year the sun can be seen for twenty-four hours.

In the New France era, the French occasionally came into contact with the eastern Inuit, those of southern Quebec-Labrador, who also frequented the lower North Shore in the 17th century.
North Algonquians
The term Algonquian is used to designate a group of Indian nations that share a common language. When the Europeans arrived, the nations belonging to this linguistic family occupied a vast territory stretching from Newfoundland to the Rockies. In the New France era, the French maintained relations mainly with the Algonquians of northeastern North America: the Micmac, the Montagnais, the Algonquin, the Attikamek, the Nipissing, the Abenaki, the Ottawa and the Ojibway.
Other nations of the Algonquian family lived further south, in regions that are now part of the United States. Their way of life was different from that of the northern Algonquians because the climate was milder, which favoured the development of agriculture.
South Algonquians
South of the Great Lakes, the French came into contact with nations of the Algonquian family, whose way of life differed from that of the northern Algonquians. The southern Algonquians consisted of the Illinois, the Shawnee, the Miami, the Potawatomi, the Menominee, the Sauk, the Fox and the Kickapoo.
These nations were spread out over a vast territory south of lakes Huron, Michigan and Erie. The Miami, who were divided into six tribes, had settled along the Wabash and Maumee rivers; the Potawatomi, the Menominee, the Sauk and the Fox occupied the region west of Lake Michigan, south of Green Bay; the Kickapoo lived along the southern part of Lake Erie; the Shawnee inhabited the Ohio Valley; and the Illinois were divided among a dozen villages on both banks of the Mississippi, between the Missouri and the Ohio.
In the 17th and 18th centuries, because of intertribal wars related to the development of the fur trade, among other things, several of these nations dispersed and moved to new areas.

The magnetic North Pole lies within the Canadian Arctic territorial claim; however, recent measurements indicate it is moving towards Siberia.
IV decouverte
With the discovery of several routes of the Northwest Passage, the quest of many centuries of explorers had been completed. In the years that followed, international interest in the Arctic was observed and the fascination with the Arctic continues to this day. For example, in 1954 the icebreaker H.M.C.S. Labrador became the first medium-sized vessel to navigate the Northwest Passage and in 1960 the United States Navy nuclear submarine Sea Dragon completed the passage. Research in the Arctic is continuous and very intense, with much yet to be studied. Every day leads to new discoveries and to this day records left by early explorers are still being found.
The maple:
Maple syrup is made from the sap that runs through the maple tree. Each spring, thousands of people come to Quebec to watch as the sap is gathered and boiled down to make delicious, devine maple syrup. Maple syrup is delicious on pancakes, waffles and ice cream, and can also be used as a substitute for sugar in cooking, as was discovered by our native peoples.
