South Africa

      South Africa is a country from the Southern Hemisphere, in the South of the African continent.

     The Atlantic Ocean borders S Africa in the West, and the Indian Ocean in the East. In the North, the main country is Botswana.

  The capital city is Pretoria, and the biggest city is Johannesburg.

   The official languages are English and Afrikaans, but there are many other languages.

History

The National Party (white people) decided Apartheid in 1948, which means black people did not have the same rights as white people, and a law was passed in 1950 to separate completely blacks from whites.

Nelson Mandela, a black activist, was sentenced to life imprisonment and spent 26 years in prison.

Then he was released and finally elected President in 1994 : he became the first black President of South Africa.

During the Apartheid, black people, although they were more numerous, had a much harder life than white people, with less money, less education, and less doctors, and twice as much infant mortality as a consequence.

Nelson Mandela shared the Nobel Peace Prize with FW de Clerk in 1993.
